Firefighter Survival Training
Tonight, the volunteers headed down to the Shaler Training Center for three scenarios of training.
1. Bail-Outs- last ditch effort to save yourself if the conditions rapidly deteriorate inside of a structure. Firefighters bail out of a window head first and, using upper body strength, flip around and lower themselves to the ground.
2. Breech / Wall escape – we used a ladder to act as wall studs for the firefighter to get through if conditions are bad in the location that the firefighter is in. It’s not an easy task traditionally, we made it harder reducing the normal 16″ down to 12″ to get through
3. Stokes Basket Ladder Rescue – This scenario is more technical and time consuming, however may be needed if someone needs rescued from an elevated surface. The victim is put into a Stokes Basket, attached one end to a point on a ladder and the other end of the Stokes Basket is a tag line to assist with controlling and lowering the basket to the ground
