Shortly before 7 AM this morning, the Cherry City and Millvale Volunteers, along with Shaler-Hampton EMS, Shaler & Millvale Police were dispatched to the 800 Block of Seavey Road for a report of a school bus stuck in flood waters. Cherry City responded with 5 Rescue Technicians and 5 firefighters. The crews accessed a total of 41 victims who were uninjured and in good spirits on the school bus. All occupants were placed on our inflatable boat and taken to dry land, where they awaited another school bus.

In addition to this story, we would like to send gratitude to the school bus driver, as he was overcome by a wall of water that rose within seconds. This driver’s bus stalled out. He attempted to restart and back out, however it would not start. The driver then spoke with the children on the bus and kept them calm until help could arrive. The students were all in good spirits, thanks in part to this calm bus driver. We want to advise you that this was a flash flooding situation and could not be avoided. The Shaler Police reviewed all footage around the area and they concluded that the driver was not at fault.
