Firefighter Survival Training / R.I.T.
The volunteers on this chilly night went to the Shaler Training Center this evening and trained on a couple of survival and Rapid Intervention Tactics. The crews first practiced bailouts – meaning if the firefighter is caught in an unsurvivable position such as a flashover or backdraft, the firefighter can multiply his/her chances for survival by finding a means of egress out of the building and getting out. The second part of training involved fire scenarios where a firefighter becomes trapped or disoriented. Crews utilized tactics known to find these victims, conduct a quick assessment and evacuate the victim out of the building. One focus of these scenarios was conducting facepiece changeovers… removing a facepiece that is damaged or lacking sufficient air and replacing it with a facepiece connected to a pre-rigged bottle in our special package (RIT Pack). This is done in near zero visibility. The first three videos are of the firefighter bailouts. The photo gallery below is of the entire night.
